Ty Segall @ The Zoo, 19.12.14
Chilled out dreaminess was swiftly overtaken by the underground sounds of Segall, and try as those little wall fans at The Zoo might, there was no escaping strangers’ sweat. I muscled my way through the crowd, and found myself in the moving, breathing beast of a mosh, which almost robbed me of the clothes on my back. Even though Segall’s more recent releases have become comparatively mellow, each song played live was noisy and packed with Garage, fuelling the crowd with a completely animalistic energy.
Security freaked out when a guy ran across the stage and dove into the crowd during the second song, escorting him away once he was passed back onstage. But Ty, who was playing a guitar over his shoulder at the time, stopped and said ‘Hey guys, you know you can do whatever you want here at my show. It’s whatever goes’. This marked the commencement of dude after dude hoisting himself onstage, and throwing himself out into the crowd. It was absurd how casual it became, like people waiting in line to go down a water slide or something…
One guy jumped up next to Segall from his spot in the front row, and was just standing there checking his messages - and meanwhile the band plays on and the crowd continues to be off the hook. After a few moments he put his phone in his back pocket, obviously remembering what he’d gotten on stage to do, and launched himself onto the crowd to be passed round for awhile.
I realised I was going to die a trampled death if I kept fighting for my spot in this pit of chaos. I got flung into the outskirts, a few people standing here asked me if I was okay, and I thought ‘Wow, what a community’. Once back on the ‘outside’, I had to watch the gig via the ginormous phone screen of the guy in front of me, who was recording the whole thing (weird, but lucky for me)…
From the crisp display of his phone screen, I saw that another guy from the audience was on stage, and was singing through a pedestal fan. I also saw that security looked really pissed off that they weren’t allowed to toss his drunken ass out.
Enough about the crowd that stole the show - Segall and band delivered exactly the kind of unhinged yet on-point show I had hoped for. Exhibiting total guitar artistry, this guy is obviously a master of his field. Ten-out-of-ten for Ty and ten-out-of-ten for an awe-inspiring crowd.
