Vegan eatery review: The Banana Lounge
But my initial disappointment soon led to acceptance, and then amazement, and then immense satisfaction.
The Banana Lounge is an off-beat little establishment in West End, ticking boxes for both the Paleo diet, and the Vegan diet. The Paleo diet is based on raw, and naturally occurring food, in a bid to eliminate the reduction of nutrition, which results from cooking and processing ingredients. While Paleo generally includes animal products, The Banana Lounge also follows vegan philosophies, so coming up with a menu which satisfies both criteria is a challenge. The verdict? They've pulled it off very nicely.
Once my friend and I had polished off our mains, we were keen to peruse the dessert offerings. I've always had a soft spot for raw brownies (another Paleo delight), however the Chai Spiced Carrot Cake had our names on it this evening.
In case the Paleo and Vegan emphasis of this place has portrayed it as "only for the die-hard" - please don't be disheartened. The moral of this story, is that the clever folk at the Banana Lounge have found ingenious ways to serve up what would seem to be a limited palate. I've only sampled their evening offerings, however the breakfast fare is so enticing that I will be back there in no time to taste 'The Big Kahuna' breakfast - how is scrambled tofu with coconut and coriander for original?
